How long does a dog live according to its size?

The average life expectancy of small, medium and large breeds, and what really helps a dog live longer.

How long does a dog live according to its size?

A Chihuahua and a Great Dane are not the same commitment: the first can live fifteen or sixteen years, the second usually stays around eight. Size, breed and daily care move that figure a lot.

Quick facts: how long a dog lives

Small (under 10 kg) 12-16 years
Medium (10-25 kg) 10-14 years
Large (25-40 kg) 9-12 years
Giant (over 40 kg) 7-10 years
Crossbreeds Usually longer
Key factor Weight and care

Why small dogs live longer

They reach adulthood sooner, their cells divide under less metabolic load and large breeds have been selected for fast growth, which costs longevity. It is not a rule without exceptions: a well-cared-for German shepherd can reach twelve, and a neglected miniature can fall short.

What really adds years

  • Keeping a healthy weight: obesity is the factor most associated with a shorter life; it is the one you control every day.
  • Vaccines and deworming up to date: preventable diseases are still a cause of early death.
  • Dental care: infected gums send bacteria to the heart and kidneys.
  • Exercise adapted to the breed: neither a garden alone nor three hours of running for a flat-faced dog.
  • An annual check-up: it catches problems that can be managed, from the heart to the kidneys.

From the age of seven or eight, small changes in the routine —shorter walks, a softer bed— gain years of good life.

How to know the stage it is in

A large dog is already «senior» at seven; a small one, at ten. The signs are the same: it sleeps more, tires sooner, takes longer to get up or its coat loses shine. From that point, check-ups every six months and food for seniors make a real difference.

The last stretch, with quality of life

When a dog reaches that point, what matters is not the number of years but how it lives: whether it eats, moves, enjoys its walk and recognises you. Your vet can help you measure that objectively, and it is better to talk about it early than in the middle of a bad night.

Frequently asked questions

Which dog lives longest?

Small breeds and crossbreeds, usually between twelve and sixteen years. Chihuahuas, dachshunds, poodles and small mongrels are the longest-lived groups; giant breeds stay around eight or ten.

Is one dog year the same as seven human years?

It is a rough approximation. It is more precise to say that the first year equals about fifteen human years, the second about nine, and from the third on roughly five per year.

Can a dog live longer with special food?

A complete diet suited to its stage and, above all, keeping a healthy weight, adds more years than any supplement. There is no feed that «extends life» by itself.
